J Wedding: Tropical Bridal Shower

J Wedding: Tropical Bridal Shower

A few weekends ago, my future mother-in-law, sister/moh, mom and beautiful bridesmaids threw me the tropical party of my dreams. Down to every last detail, they made my first bridal shower completely unforgettable. I wanted to share some snaps from the day (because its too pretty not to!) and some inspiration (because it's totally possible to get the Pinterest look for less - these ladies did all of this themselves).

I'll start by saying every bride chooses to do things differently, as one should! I was asked by my maids if I wanted to be surprised, or a little involved. While I don't think a bride should take on planning her own party, I had some pretty clear ideas of the kind of shower I would love. Inspired by my trip to Thailand earlier in the year, I was loving all things tropical and wanted a celebration that would take me back to warm weeks by the ocean! My girls were more than happy to accommodate and the result was absolutely beautiful.

Because I'm a designer, I definitely wanted to play a role in making the invitations - I mean, how could I not? This actually helped us save on cost quite a bit. We ordered from VistaPrint, which is great for fast, decent quality prints. I never use it for anything super fancy, but for a standard 5x7 they came out just fine. Starting with watercolor tropical foliage, I tied in the geometry of our other wedding suite materials and the same typeface (my favorite, Baskerville bold italic). It took less than an hour to create and I loved that I had a truly custom design!

It's traditional to wear white to your bridal shower too, not just your wedding! Since it's really hard to not go crazy buying LWD's in this season of life, I'm really looking for dresses that can be worn again and again in order to justify the need for at least 3 ;) This beachy slip fit the theme of the party perfectly, while promising endless opportunities to be worn again - on our honeymoon, as a swim cover-up, you name it! I love that it can be dressed up or down. I paired it with bright lavender heels, teal nail polish and a berry lip - some may say it's too many accent colors but hey, it's a tropical party.

And can we talk about this amazing backdrop?! My girls Cate and Devrie found a blank wall on the back porch and staple gunned this foliage photo op in seconds flat. Cate sourced all the greenery at the San Francisco Flower Market.

Cate made these incredible bouquets all by herself, using wholesale ingredients. I'm still dying over the real baby pineapples! Protea also makes my heart happy. They really brought the whole theme to life on the tables.

This was the cutest and easiest game! I'm really big on not overwhelming guests with difficult games or ones that take too long. All they had to do here was guess my age in the various photos (moms and siblings not allowed!) Everyone had an equal chance and my high school friends got a kick out of the memories. My girl Sarah painted this gold hula hoop and added greenery to match the decor - so adorable.

Um, can we talk about this pineapple drink dispenser?? Only $20 at World Market! I actually bought it off Cate because I had to have it for future parties. The sangria was killer, too.

I couldn't find satisfactory thank you cards...so I made my own. Paper Source has these amazing coral envelopes and I picked up the cutest pineapple stamp at Michael's for a dollar! Combined with my fave brush pens right now (Blick brand) I had the easiest and cheapest thank you's. I'm loving color box ink pads, they have super vibrant metallic options and it looks so luxe on paper. All that extra foliage came in handy ;)
