A Cactus Themed Soirée
I can't pretend to celebrate Cinco de Mayo (though yes, I do actually know what the holiday commemorates) - but with the turn of the weather, a warm evening munching on tacos and drinking margaritas can't be turned down! Also - I love anything cactus related and since I saw an idea on Pinterest using cactus leaves in a floral arrangement, I knew exactly what I wanted the setup to look like. Desert inspired!
As I've said before, I'm a big advocate of pulling items that I already own from around the house and figuring out new combos to decorate with. I don't believe in buying or storing stuff that only makes an appearance once a year! Ryan and I love to travel, so our home is filled with special items we've collected around the world. Usually my gorgeous (and cozy!) mexican blanket I picked up in San Diego hangs on a blanket ladder in the living room, but draped over the table it doubles nicely as a runner. My favorite rose gold tea lights turned into tiny vases for some extra blooms. My black and white plates and gold flatware pair with almost anything, so you might recognize them from other setups! The one item I did recently pick up is that amazing charger - I nabbed two from Target since the boho feel pairs so well with a lot of my decor - I'll be using those all summer!
Let me talk about the cactus leaves for a minute. I saw this idea a month ago, done for a bridal shower and nearly lost it. I mean, how amazing and unique! I love doing my own flowers and have a habit of picking up weekly blooms at Trader Joe's. I knew I had to figure out how to get cactus into my arrangement. The only problem, I didn't want to dismember a poor cactus just for this! THEN - much to my delight - I saw piles of cactus leaves for sale at the grocery store. What?? Definitely not your average grocery store (I happened to be at Berkeley Bowl, which carries a ton of unique items) but these were being sold as nopales, because did you know you can eat cactus and make tacos with it? I grabbed so many since at 89c a lb, they were such a steal! But I had no idea how to get them into this arrangement. The leaves were not stiff as I had expected, they were kind of floppy which makes sense because they haven't been attached to a plant for a while. Not being a florist, it took me a minute to think of a solution - and then it hit me! I grabbed a pack of cheap wood skewers while I was still at the store. SO EASY.
Voila! I poked the skewers through the bottom center of the leaf as far up as they would go. One of them accidentally poked out the back side...but I just covered it up with flowers. I tucked in some sweet wildflowers from TJ's - again, so simple.
I love a good blended strawberry marg! I brought lots of copper into this setup, I love how it highlights all the pink tones.
What do you guys think? Would you put cactus leaves in your next summer arrangement?
